    The Grave Tender

Warnings: Violence My Thoughts The Grave Tender is a haunting and beautifully woven southern gothic about a broken family and the love that binds them together. The story starts slow as the story introduces Hadley, her friends, family, and their small town which on the surface seems idyllic. It’s the sort of town where everyone knows each other over generations, but the smiling town hides many secrets. What I loved most about this book was how it dealt with matters of appearance. It’s easy to point fingers and blame those that look the most guilty, who are the most eccentric. It’s the folly of letting appearances dictate our perception of…

    Now You’re One of Us

My Thoughts I have found a true Japanese gothic and I am head over heels in love! Now You’re One of Us is the story of a young woman that marries into a very large, traditional Japanese family. All members of the family live under the same roof in a sprawling estate, they welcome her with open arms and heap constant praise on her. She comes to love the family, but Noriko can’t help but feel that there is something off about this family. Despite now being part of the family, Noriko feels like there is a wall between her and the Shito family. As she gets to know them,…

    The Dead House

My Thoughts The Dead House is a chilling ghost story about a young woman’s descent into madness as she’s swallowed up by the wild Irish countryside. The prose in this novel is absolutely beautiful and paints a stunning picture of a countryside that feels stuck in time, still deeply connected to Celtic tradition. The land is haunted by the tragedy of the Great Famine, where over a million people died of disease and starvation. When I had read that there was a ouija board in the synopsis I’ll admit that I rolled my eyes. I quickly found that I was mistaken in my pre-judgment of the novel. This book had…

    Gothic Tales of Haunted Love

My Review: When I first laid eyes on this collection I knew I had to read it. The cover is stunning and the idea of Gothic romance comics instantly caught my attention, being a fan of gothic literature in its various forms. It was a fast read and while I found a few spectacular comics in the collection I ended up feeling only lukewarm overall. Gothic Tales of Haunted Love seeks to revitalize an aging genre of literature while paying homage to the short-lived gothic romance comics of the 1970s and 1980s. Despite a variety of tropes that have become standard in the genre I feel that there is a…

    A Human Stain

Warnings: Gore My Thoughts What a wild ride this story was, I read it in a single sitting before bed and I couldn’t put it down. The opening of A Human Stain reminds me of The Turn of the Screw; a young woman is enlisted by a wealthy gentleman to care for his recently orphaned nephew. The young woman goes to a remote castle and finds something strange is going on. It is a beautifully written gothic mystery with a healthy dose of body horror. I loved the main character, a brash lesbian with an eye for the beautiful and quiet nursemaid. Everything about the castle and the people that…
