    The Martian

My Review: A lone scientist finds himself left behind on planet Mars with limited supplies and no rescue in sight. Add in a dash of humor and The Martian makes for a perfect science fiction adventure and it is no surprise that this book was wildly popular upon release. The book does well explaining the science behind many of the things that Watney does to survive, making this a good solid hard science fiction book that would please fans of the genre. Although some of the technical details may be intimidating or a bore for some readers, the humor littered throughout makes this book a lighthearted read. It’s a great…

    The Terracotta Bride

My Thoughts The Terracotta Bride was a surprising little novella, it had a lot going for it for such a small package and can easily be read in one sitting. It was imaginative and gave me a lot to think about, I’ve never read anything like it and I honestly wish that it could have been a little longer. Due to the length of this story, I was disappointed to find that the eternal life conspiracy mentioned in the synopsis was pretty lacking. There is a brief explanation of the theory and what it could do but it was both confusing and did not feel like it was developed enough.…

    Binti

My Thoughts I have been excited to read this book for a long time given how much praise it has received, and I feel that this may have built up my expectations. What the story does well is to establish Binti as a character, she is a talented young Himba woman, an semi-Nomadic indigenous people from northern Namibia. The Himba are most famously known for covering themselves with otjize that protects their skin from the harsh desert climate. In the futuristic imagining of the Himba people, they are still isolated from society and so Binti’s journey into the rest of the world is one of discovery but also danger as…

    The Wood

My Thoughts Winter hails from a line of guardians that protect the space between worlds, a guardian of time. She is raised to fulfill her destiny as another guardian of the mysterious wood, to lead travelers safely back to their own time periods and stop anyone that would use the power of the wood to alter time and space. However there are rules that every guardian must follow, because the wood was never a place meant for mortals. The idea behind the wood, the guardians, and the magic system in this novel is truly unique and I enjoyed the world building. The wood came alive as both this beautiful but…
